Dr Tiffany Cone is a Lecturer in Humanities at the Asian University for Women in Chittagong, Bangladesh.
After finishing at St Hilda's at the end of 2000, Tiffany completed a BA (Hons) majoring in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Otago. During this time, she also travelled to China and was involved in the production of several documentary film projects exploring questions of economy, gender and philosophy. After graduation, she worked for a number of years in Educational Media at the Higher Education Development Centre at the University of Otago.
In 2009, she moved to China to prepare for PhD research and in 2011 she began her PhD in Cultural Anthropology at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. This took her back to China in late 2011 for a further year, during which she carried out ethnographic fieldwork amongst a Chinese-Muslim community. She graduated with her PhD in 2015.
In August of 2015, Tiffany took up a teaching fellowship with an NPO called Filmmakers Without Borders at the Asian University for Women in Chittagong, Bangladesh. The Asian University for Women is a liberal arts university that provides higher education to young women from throughout Asia and currently has representation from 16 countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Vietnam, Burma and Syria.
She is now a full-time faculty member at AUW and is currently teaching courses on National Cinemas in Asia, Writing Ethnography, and Applied Anthropology. She is also working on publishing her research as a book this year with Palgrave Macmillan (NY). In the future, she hopes to return to Dunedin, New Zealand, and continue to work in the Higher Education sector.
